Geneva Freeport

The Geneva Freeport, one of the world’s oldest and largest freeport facilities, is home to an art collection estimated at a value of US$100 billion. Switzerland’s Geneva Free Port—a massive art repository located in the country’s Lake Geneva region—is considered by many to be the world’s slargest art warehouse. It is also one of the most secretive.

Geneva Freeport is a modern and efficient facility, the largest of its kind in the world. The headquarters and main buildings are found in La Praille, an industrial area south of the Canton, only a few kilometers away from the French borders. The entire Geneva Freeport extends over 150,000 square meters, half of it being a duty-free zone.

This is where business owners can store their goods tax-free, as long as the items remain in the free port. The laws of Geneva are permissive and allow for discreet art sales. Inside, the rooms are kept at a constant temperature and humidity, with artwork and antiquities stored in impenetrable safes behind doors equipped with biometric readers. These grant access only to the museum’s curators and staff.
